When we remember our fallen service members, we should not forget the ones with four feet. Or even the ones with wings.
Dogs and horses have fought beside humans for thousands of years. Not because they believed in whatever the humans thought they were fighting for. But because they loved their humans and trusted them.
Animals were doing a job. Donkeys and elephants and oxen hauled supplies. Pigeons carried messages. 
Dogs sniff out what humans can’t, and attack when ordered. Horses carry human combatants, and were very often the first to be killed.
And may Ceiling Cat speed the day when our animals can trust us not to put them in danger for our greed, pride, and hubris.
