While it is fitting to remember and mourn those who were lost in our wars, the majority of the graves with all those little flags placed on them are those who survived. Unfortunately for many they got to relive their adventures daily with flashbacks and all the other symptoms of PTSD.
For the last 14 years we have watched the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq claim thousands of lives. I have watched many of my friends who are veterans get dragged back into the abyss of black thoughts and raging anger.
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battles raged higher
After I publish this I will head up to the Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial (Garden of Solace) and walk the walls. I will also remember those whose names are not on the many walls across the country and died a little bit every day.
