Local Politics - Memorial Day

Here is today’s article about Barrington, Rhode Island’s Memorial Day Parade and my response to what I think was a First Amendment overstep by a colleague (and a flat- out mischaracterization of my position). It’s important to remember that people of all types and political views have died in service to our country. We debate the issues that divide us everyday and that’s how democracy is supposed to work.

But Memorial Day and Veterans Day are about honoring those who sacrificed so that those debates and the votes for elective office or on legislation after our debates would have meaning. It is therefore in support of the American system that the people who sacrificed did so.

It is important to look beyond our differences. We will have plenty of time to strongly debate the matters about which we disagree. We need not carry those disagreements into the manner in which we honor, for one day in May and one day in November, those who served and sacrificed for all of us.
