Losers' Day. It may be coming up sooner than you think.
This next Monday, for now, is still called “Memorial Day,” and is set aside to recognize those who have paid the ultimate price in service to our nation. It is a solemn occasion during which we should all consider closely the price of freedom and--this year especially--the cost of folly and the imminent threats that our democracy faces.
This November, we will face a choice when we vote. On one side we have a man who (according to his own former chief of staff, a retired four-star Marine Corps general) reportedly called Marines who died at Belleau Wood “suckers” and fallen soldiers at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery “losers.” He couldn’t fathom why anyone would serve in the US military if there was “nothing in it for them.”
He’s likewise disparaged former POWs, to include a US Senator, and a past President who was shot down during World War II. He goes further in calling for the execution for treason of a loyal soldier who served on active duty for over 40 years, retiring just last year as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is disgusted by those maimed by war and has ordered subordinates to never be seen publicly with them again.
So, if he’s elected, let’s take that path and rename the day as Mr. Trump would prefer. Let’s honor our fallen with his preferred term for them, so that we can all fall into lock-step (in one Reich?) with a multi-time draft evader (bone spurs!) with no concept of what it means to serve others or a higher cause. Let’s make the last Monday in May each year “Losers’ Day.”
They lost their lives. Their families lost their sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters. Next Monday is Losers’ Day in Trump World. Voting for him in November is a vote for “Losers’ Day,” and for a person absolutely devoid of human decency, much less the respect for our nation, our service members, and our war dead that an American Commander-in-Chief should possess as a minimum requirement for the office. #memorialday #laprogressive
