We are in Memorial Day Weekend. Please be aware of greetings on this holiday. We can say Happy Veterans Day in November but Memorial Day is different.
For combat vets, it is disturbing for most when greeted with Happy Memorial Day. I say this from watching expressions and hearing how many veterans react. You would not say Happy Funeral or Death Day but it is the same thing. It is a MEMORIAL to the veterans who have served their country.
I cringe every time I hear someone say Happy Memorial Day. They really do not get it. The folks that use that greeting.
Memorial day is not about barbecues and pool parties. It is a day to remember and honor for those young men and women who gave all. It is also a somber day for those who witnessed the horror of those who gave all and have survival guilt.
I am not one of those people who constantly correct folks but I do take exception on people not really understanding the effect a joyful greeting to a veteran that is anything but joyful..
Please say….and it will be received well….Thinking of you on Memorial Day...Wishing health and remembering you on this holiday. Wishing you well or Thinking of those who gave all this holiday.
But, please don’t say Happy Memorial Day. It is not a celebration. It is honoring those who are no longer with us.
Words matter.
